Renewal Enhanced Armed Guard (Coming Soon)

Enhanced Armed Guard authorization renews at the same time as the officer’s Armed Guard registration. Tennessee does not require additional long‑gun training or requalification for renewal unless an employer chooses to require it.

1. Renewal Timeline

• Renewal opens 60 days before the expiration date.
• Enhanced authorization expires with the Armed Guard license.
• If the Armed Guard registration expires, Enhanced Armed status expires automatically.
• The officer cannot work in an Enhanced Armed capacity until renewal is approved.

2. Required Items for Renewal

To renew Enhanced Armed Guard authorization, the applicant must submit:

A. Armed Guard Renewal Application

Completed through the TDCI CORE system.

(Enhanced status renews automatically when the Armed Guard license is renewed.)

B. Renewal Fee

Paid electronically during the application process.

C. Updated Photo

Must be:

• Passport‑style
• Color
• Plain background
• Taken within the last 6 months

D. Fingerprints

• NOT required again unless the state cannot retrieve prior prints.
• If prints are missing or expired in the system, the applicant will be prompted to redo them.

3. No Additional Training Required by the State

Tennessee PPS does not require:

• Long‑gun requalification
• Additional long‑gun training
• Continuing education

However, employers may require annual or periodic long‑gun requalification as part of their internal policy.

4. Background Check Review

During renewal, PPS will:

• Re‑run the applicant’s criminal history
• Verify continued eligibility to possess firearms
• Deny renewal if new disqualifying offenses appear

Enhanced Armed status cannot be renewed if the officer no longer qualifies for Armed Guard status.

5. Disqualifying Factors at Renewal

An Enhanced Armed Guard cannot renew if they now have:

• Any felony conviction
• Any violent or weapon‑related misdemeanor within the last 5 years
• Any drug‑related misdemeanor within the last 5 years
• Any theft/fraud/dishonesty conviction within the last 5 years
• Any domestic violence conviction (federal firearm prohibition)
• Any order of protection restricting firearm possession
• Any condition that makes them a prohibited firearm possessor under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)

6. Renewal Outcome

Once approved, the officer receives:

• A renewed Armed Guard registration card
• Continued Enhanced Armed authorization
• A new 2‑year expiration date

If denied, PPS will issue a written explanation and appeal instructions.
