Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit

The Tennessee Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit course is designed to provide citizens with a comprehensive understanding of handgun safety, legal responsibilities, and practical firearm handling. The state now requires a minimum of 4 hours of classroom instruction combined with a mandatory live‑fire range component, resulting in an average total course time of approximately 6 hours, depending on class size and instructor pacing.

Classroom Instruction (Minimum 4 Hours)

The classroom portion focuses on the knowledge and judgment required to responsibly carry a handgun in Tennessee. Core topics include:

• Firearm safety fundamentals Safe handling, storage, transportation, and accident prevention.

• Handgun operation and maintenance Understanding firearm parts, function, loading/unloading, and basic care

• Tennessee laws governing carry and use of force Legal definitions, prohibited locations, duty to retreat, and lawful self‑defense

• Interactions with law enforcement Best practices during traffic stops and public encounters while carrying.

• Situational awareness and conflict avoidance Recognizing threats, de‑escalation principles, and responsible decision‑making.

This section ensures students understand not only how to carry a handgun, but when and why it is legally and ethically appropriate to use one.

 Live‑Fire Range Component

Following classroom instruction, students complete a required practical shooting portion. This includes:

• Live‑fire exercises or qualification demonstrating basic proficiency

• Instructor evaluation of accuracy, control, and safe operation
