This intensive 4-hour program is designed to refresh and refine the skills of current armed officers. The curriculum includes a deep dive into legal limitations on the use of a firearm, liability issues under Tennessee Titles 39 and 40, and modern de-escalation strategies. A major portion of the class is dedicated to hands-on marksmanship and safety protocols. You will be required to demonstrate proficiency through a live-fire qualification course on a commissioner-approved silhouette target, where a score of 70% or higher is mandatory for passing. Upon successful completion, you will receive the certified training transcript and documentation required for your biennial renewal application through the state’s online portal.

Tennessee Armed Security Guard Renewal Requirements (Every 2 Years)

Armed security guard registrations in Tennessee must be renewed biennially to remain valid. Renewal is completed through the TDCI CORE system. The state does not require requalification or additional firearms training for renewal unless an employer chooses to require it.

1. Renewal Timeline

Armed guard registrations must be renewed before the expiration date.

Renewal opens 60 days prior to expiration in the CORE system.

If the registration expires, the individual cannot work armed until renewed.

2. Required Items for Renewal

To renew an Armed Guard registration, the applicant must submit:

A. Renewal Application

Completed online through the TDCI CORE portal.

B. Renewal Fee

Paid electronically during the application process.

C. Updated Photo

  • Passport‑style
  • Color
  • Plain background
  • Taken within the last 6 months

D. Fingerprints

  • NOT required again unless the state cannot retrieve prior prints
  • If prints are missing or expired in the system, the applicant will be prompted to redo them

3. No Additional Training Required

Tennessee PPS does not require:

  • Requalification
  • Additional firearms training
  • Continuing education

However, employers may require annual or periodic requalification as part of their internal policy.

4. Background Check Review

During renewal, PPS will:

  • Re‑run the applicant’s criminal history
  • Verify continued eligibility under state and federal firearm laws
  • Deny renewal if new disqualifying offenses appear

5. Disqualifying Factors at Renewal

An armed guard cannot renew if they now have:

  • Any new felony conviction
  • Any new violent or weapon‑related misdemeanor within the last 5 years
  • Any new drug‑related misdemeanor within the last 5 years
  • Any new theft/fraud/dishonesty conviction within the last 5 years
  • Any new domestic violence conviction (federal firearm prohibition)
  • Any order of protection that restricts firearm possession
  • Any condition that makes them a prohibited firearm possessor under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)

6. Renewal Outcome

Once approved, the applicant receives:

  • A new Armed Guard registration card
  • A new 2‑year expiration date

If denied, PPS will issue a written explanation and appeal instructions.
