About this training
In Tennessee, an Initial Unarmed Security Guard is a licensed professional responsible for the protection of persons and property through non-lethal means Regulated by the Tennessee Private Protective Services (PPS) division, the role transitions a civilian into a state-registered officer through specific legal and technical training
Core Responsibilities
Visible Deterrence & Patrol: Conducts regular foot or vehicle patrols to identify signs of intrusion, unauthorized entry, or safety hazards.
Access Control: Manages entry and exit points by verifying credentials, monitoring visitor logs, and checking surveillance feeds (CCTV).
Incident Management: Responds to alarms, fires, and medical emergencies. While unarmed, they act as the "eyes and ears" for law enforcement, stabilizing scenes and coordinating with first responders.
Documentation: Maintains Daily Activity Reports (DARs) and prepares detailed incident reports that can be used as evidence in legal proceedings.
Mandatory Training (4-Hour Curriculum)
To qualify for registration, applicants must pass a 4-hour state-certified course. The curriculum is divided into four critical pillars:
1. Orientation (1 hr): Professionalism, ethics, and the role of security in private risk management.
2. Legal Powers & Limitations (1 hr): Authority on private property, citizen's arrest, and civil/criminal liability.
3. Emergency Procedures (1 hr): Fire prevention, first aid basics, and evacuation protocols.
4. General Duties (1 hr): Patrol techniques, report writing, and public relations.
