Less‑Than‑Lethal Training provides security guards with the knowledge and skills needed to safely carry and use non‑deadly defensive tools while on duty. The course focuses on legally compliant, responsible, and controlled use of devices such as batons, chemical agents (OC spray), and electronic control devices. Because these tools can still cause injury or create liability, Tennessee requires guards to complete device‑specific certification before carrying any less‑than‑lethal weapon in the performance of their duties.Training begins with an overview of Tennessee law, including the guard’s legal authority, use‑of‑force limitations, and civil and criminal liabilities associated with improper use. Students learn how less‑than‑lethal tools fit into the force continuum and how to make sound decisions under pressure.The course emphasizes threat assessment, situational awareness, and the importance of using verbal commands and de‑escalation before resorting to physical tools. Students practice safe striking zones for batons, correct spray patterns and distances for OC, and the operational and safety features of electronic control devices. The training also addresses aftercare responsibilities, reporting requirements, and how to document incidents to protect both the guard and their employer. By the end of the course, guards understand when and how to use less‑than‑lethal tools safely, effectively, and legally.
